How to Use IRC on ZeroNode
IRC is Internet Relay Chat and has been around for decades. There are a number of different IRC servers out there and we use ZeroNode, which is used by the No Agenda family of podcasts.
A simple web interface is provided to access this server, but you’re better off using a real IRC client if possible. The following will tell you how to configure your client.
Given IRC has existed almost as long as the Internet itself, practically every platform has multiple IRC clients for it. This is not a comprehensive list, but these are the ones I am using (except on Android, which was a suggestion):
- Web-based chat: Kiwi IRC — Link should have appropriate settings preconfigured to join #lotuseffect
- Mac: LimeChat
- Windows and Linux: HexChat
- iOS: Igloo
- Android: Revolution IRC
Configuring Your IRC Client
The main information you need to configure in your IRC client is the following:
- Hostname: irc.zeronode.net
- Port: 6697 (TLS/SSL) or 6667 (without TLS/SSL)
- Password: empty
- Nickname: mycoolnickname
This will connect you to the ZeroNode IRC network, which hosts the No Agenda trollroom and similar rooms for other podcasts on the No Agenda stream and in the family.
There are multiple channels on the server. Here are the more interesting ones. You can get a complete list of channels by typing /list into your IRC client:
- #lotuseffect (for The Lotus Effect)
- #NoAgenda (for the No Agenda show and the stream)
- #HogStory (for the trendiest podcast in the universe, Hog Story)
- #sewerchat (for the Nick the Rat podcast)
- #BowlAfterBowl (for the Bowl After Bowl podcast)
- #RareEncounter (for the Rare Encounter podcast)
- #greenroom (for the Behind the Sch3m3s podcast)
- #absna6pack (for the Abs ‘n a 6 Pack podcast)
- #OO (Ryno the Bearded’s OO Show)
To join our room:
How can I “speak” on #noagenda?
Only registered nicks can be used to speak in the #noagenda Troll Room and possibly others. To do that, you will have to register the nickname of your choosing with nickserv. That is done by sending the following command in your IRC client:
/msg nickserv register mysupersecretpassword firstname.lastname@example.org
This email must exist and you must follow the instructions in the email in order to confirm your registration.
Then, each time you log in, you can simply identify yourself to nickserv, after which you will be granted voice in the #noagenda Troll Room:
/msg nickserv identify mysupersecretpassword
Note that some IRC clients also have a way to configure a nickserv password as part of the configuration, which you can use instead.
How come my IRC client on iPhone won’t stay connected?
Background network connections are limited by iOS. To stay connected, you will need to use an IRC bouncer, which effectively acts as a proxy buffering the messages for you. You can set up ZNC or use something like BNC4Free, which runs a public bouncer that you can use.
